The Architectural Style of our "Future"

The architectural styles represented in films speak to numerous ends in various ways.   Style is really only relevant when it is compared with something else - it is a relative thing that requires attention to a larger picture.   Over the course of this term, films of many genres have been viewed which may fall into three categories.   The first is those films whose action is concentrated solely in space and does not really offer a comparison of styles - rather, they are statements about what the future style of space architecture could be.   The second is those films that present styles on Earth contrasted with styles on other planets.   This highlights and strengthens the propositions of each.   Finally, films that take on a larger stylistic universe present an extremely diverse range of techniques representing the full spectrum of possibility.

It is interesting to see all the various styles presented as possibilities for our space future, and also how they vary so widely.   While some use examples from their time period to inform their style, others use only their imaginations to create something truly out of this world.
