INTRODUCTION

Eating is one of those necessities you cannot escape.
Except, of course, if you are a character in a Hollywoodian space movie.

This site explores the role of food in selected movies viewed in this class.  Although most space fiction ignores or avoids having to show their characters eating, some others have made a conscious effort to offer some kind of resolution.

However, what astronauts in orbit actually eat is nevertheless quite different from what is shown in these films.  To find out more about this, please see the section “Food in Space”.

Silent Running, Outland, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Total Recall are discussed in terms of how they show food, what is eaten, and what this represents.
