Heroes, Anti-Heroes, Villains and Their Surroundings

"You either die a hero or live long enough to become the bad guy."

- Harvey Dent, The Dark Knight, 2008

The comes the a point in the process of growing up that a person realizes that life is not as black and white as Disney would have us believe. The complexities of human nature become overtly apparent, the naive opinions of the good, the twisted morals of the bad, and that terrifying grey area where we find ourselves more often than not.

In the films veiwed in this course there is very rarely the innocent and the guilty, the truly good and the wickedly bad. There is a break in this traditional archetype, and the reveal of the anti-hero whose inner struggles, sins and motivations are much more real. And with the magic of film this complex nature of character is reflected in the surreal surroundings shown in the following films.

This site will explore the nature of the environments and the character of the heroes, anti-heroes, and villains in the films: Renaissance, Brazil, and A Clockwork Orange.
