CONCLUSION

What's the future for our cities?, can exist a city "under law" or is just a new sort of Utopia? Does the strict control of urban spaces manipulate the way to live? These are the main questions movies and art ask to audience.
From Metropolis, Cinema has always faced these kind of issue, representing in a “mataphorical sense” problems and aspects of contemporary society. It seems that the urban spaces of our future cities are going to be the setting for conflicts due to the difficult relation between apocalypse and redemption.
On the one hand the fear for a pessimistic future where city is almost lived as a jail; on the other hand the hope, the fight to resist and to defend the margin for a balanced life.
The urban future represented by the cinema, is often composed by skyscrapers cities where design and planning rules seem created by evil architects. These places devour every feeling, every sense of free-choice creating a society built on the idea of the mass rather than on that of the individual.
Just think for a moment to The Matrix Trilogy. In the last chapter, Matrix Revolution, we discover that Neo's main enemy is a charachter called The Architect.
Blade Runner, The Matrix, Escape from New York, Equilibrium and the up-to-date Renaissance, draw a bad city where almost all the life aspects are under contol, but where there is always something that subtracts itself from any rules. These movies describe a sense of calamity that goes with the urban growth, where there is a an opposition between authority trying to control something that is naturaly beyond control, and heroes fighting to free from chains, to find an escape.
The representation of a bad city correspond to a description of a bad society.

It's clearly visible the power of architecture, that can manipulte reality and human behaviour. These movies, and many other, show a future not so far, or better still look ahead to something that is happening yet. The real enemy for our future is the only one who has enough power to manipulate reality, to turn a menace in something real, to modifiy urban spaces following outrageous rules: as we said previously it's the architect/director.
But, if a director can just imagine how bad a city can be, an architect can make this nightmare comes true.
