alienation as defined by:
2. the state of being an outsider or the feeling of being isolated, as from society

Film : Solaris

The film “Solaris” also presents us with a situation of extreme isolation and alienation. The majority of the film is set on a space ship which is orbiting around the oceanic planet Solaris. The main character, Kris Kelvin, is a scientist who becomes dispatched onto the space ship in order to evaluate the mission, because there have been reports of strange occurrences on board. When he arrives, he finds all of the scientists onboard in a state of emotional turmoil. The affect of being on near Solaris has caused the people on the ship to experience hallucinations, which also affect Kelvin after spending a short amount of time onboard. The hallucinations that the characters experience are reflections of their inner lives and emotions. Each of them are forced to dealing with their own most intimate and difficult feelings, which make each of them feel isolated, desperate and lonely. To further emphasize this feeling of alienation, we are shown Kelvin looking out of the window of the ship onto the great expanse of the space beyond. In that moment the extent of their distance from one another, and further from civilization is expressed.
