Many of us can watch a horror movie without cringing when Jason slices off yet another teenagers head, but it’s not as easy to avoid when presented with a more familiar context.  Once the violence becomes familiar it becomes more real and more terrifying.  Stanley Kubrick puts our fears into play by bringing everyday violence into our own homes.  In A Clockwork Orange, The malevolent Alex and his maniacal Droogs thrive on cruelty and bring their sadistic revelry into the lavish home of an unsuspecting couple.  With this wonton belligerence Kubrick forces us to acknowledge that violence exists everywhere and can strike anywhere at anytime.
