Alex is our hero and narrator in a Clockwork Orange, and because of this, despite the autrocities he commits in the first half we feel remorse and even empathize with his treatment in the latter half of the film. We have come to find him a helpless product of society. The siding with characters despite their crimes is one of the major tricks of first person narrative, we have walked in their shoes and really have no opportunity to try on anyone else’s in such a constrained first person view.
