joker the joker, played by jack nicholson, adds to the sense of madness in the film batman. he is indeed a crazy person, but this joker doesn't bring the same kind of intensity as the same character in the dark knight. this joker dances around, sings, cracks jokes and wares outragous suits so we tend to only fear and oppose the crimes he commits, and not the man himself. he has clear motive and history, to take revenge on batman and gotham city for the disfigurement of his body and face. elaborate sets (gothic towers, art deco and industrial architecture) and props (bright costumes, balloons, masks) help the joker convey the madness of the state of gotham city.
