Anime-inspired direct-to-DVD anthology film. Comprised of six short stories, from diverse creators, including Academy Award-nominated Josh Olsen (A History of Violence), Batman Begins writer David S. Goyer, and comics scribe Brian Azzarello. It's planned for a release window of two to four weeks prior to the release of The Dark Knight, and would bridge the gap between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1117563/plotsummary The Gotham Knight series adds an interesting dimension to the newest Batman movies. These animated shorts manage to impress upon the viewer the myth of Batman and successfully bridges the gap between Batman Begins and Dark Knight. Another movie that did a similar type of bridge between movies was The Matrix and its Animatrix. The effectiveness of this method of bridging movies is largely due to its animation and the freedoms inherent to the anime style. Japanese animation became popularised in North America from the 1980's and has within the past 10 years become a large part of the North American animation industry. The use of this style of animation in the Gotham Knight creates a mythical background to the Batman character. In a sense it extrapolates on the mask and creates, as one can more easily do through animation, an exaggerated sense of form, movement and infallibility. The use of the Batman mask and the masks of the villains creates a surreal imagination, not unlike the original graphic novel that polarises and abstracts their struggle so that both are involved in a superhuman battle that we the audience may merely marvel at. The use of the mask is interesting in these animates series because in the case of Batman, he wears not only a facial mask, but his entire representation of himself is a disguise. In these animations, his mask and disguise becomes exaggerated beyond human capabilities or expectations, to become a vehicle truly of the imagination. This is most possible through animation, as we will also see with the movie Paprika. For further info on anime, click here |
