Most importantly Archer’s apparent Substance D hallucinations are sometimes validated as true events within reality when Archer witnesses them a second time through the surveillance system. The system should provide an almost authoritative objective point of view because of its ability to only record events in candid. Therefore after witnessing the transformation of the one stand girl into Donna, Archer cannot believe his eyes because his own delusions are now being rendered into reality from multiple perspectives. |

In fact the surveillance system is what generates most of the confusion, not clarity, within Archer. Now that Archer has doubled himself with two identities are naturally opposed to each other, Archer must find a way for the two sides to co-exist. This aspect of Archer is quite enduring because he understands that a fragmented identity only leads to more confusion and deceit. He tries to the best of his abilities to escape his circumstances. However in The Truman Show, this sense of honesty is completely vacant in Marlon, a character one could associated to being Truman’s best friend/brother from another mother. |
