Los Angeles in 2019, as shown in Ridley Scott’s BLADE_RUNNER (1982) is a run-down, decaying city. The world is in a terrible state, and is for the most part inhabited by the unfortunate souls who have not abandoned it for the “off world”. Recognizable buildings from present day LA are seen throughout the movie, but have become run down and dilapidated. It is a world of darkness. Everything is wet, dirty and generally unpleasant. Even during the day, it never gets bright. The setting is indicative of the state of human society and is constant throughout the whole film. The dark, damp setting is a very powerful tool in perpetuating the grim storyline.
