With the technology and the audience expectation of a flashy 2008 superhero action film, Christopher Nolan stylizes the Dark Knight into a visual stimulating extravaganza with film noir elements. Although the film veers away from the typical use of black and white in film noir, it adapts a relatively monochromatic colour scheme, low key lighting in several scenes, and a contrast between light and dark. Silhouettes of lonely characters walking, Batman flying through the air, and chaotic gloomy interiors of the prison evoke feelings of classic film noir, yet are executed within a modern environment.
