The theme of madness is prevalent throughout the four films. Madness is portrayed with violence, control, overt sexuality, dictatorship, greed, corruption, moral ambiguity and insanity of the characters. Each film relates to the notion of a 'society gone wrong', which is a defining characteristic of a film noir movie. The deliberate use of stylistic cinematography, the city and the journey of the protagonist feed into the feeling of madness throughout the films. The moral ambiguity in film noir forces the viewer to reflect on current society's own state of morality. With the events of WWII, are these worlds of Gotham City, Libria, and futuristic Paris that far from reality?
