Fritz Lang’s Metropolis is one of the earliest films to address this issue.  This is a story of a fantastic megapolis that runs on the sweat and blood of an oppressed working class. The workers toil night and day to sustain a world that serves only the city dwellers above.   It is through contrast with the stunning city above, that the decrepit worker’s city below can so effectively speak to our fears of such oppression and prohibition of personal liberties.
