Initially, the protagonist of Equilibrium, John Preston, begins as a highly trained Cleric devoted to destroying 'sense offenders' and items the enable emotion. During the film, he becomes an outsider in Libria due to the withdrawal of the Prozium. When Preston meets the female protagonist, Mary O'Brien, she represents immorality. Through his awakening, he realizes that she embodies truth, justice and humanity. When Preston epitomized the morals of Libria, he was depicted as a good citizen of Libria, but as he evolved into an outsider, he related to the values of current society.
