Sin City is a very unique movie because of its complex formal narrative structure. If Truman Show embodied a structured thematic organization to character significance, Sin City takes this to the extreme. Nothing in Sin City is unintentional. One could even interpret the film as a contemporary interpretation of classical literature with epic story structures and highly symbolic characters. Therefore the act of dismemberment and doubling have very specific roles within the story and are not intelligent diddles used by the director provoke the audience into thinking. Sin City is not a thinking movie in the way one would ponder the consequences of A Scanner Darkly. Consequently Sin City has the opportunity for completely over the top execution.
Therefore one can then consider the direct thematic implications of doubling and dismemberment in the film.
