Director: Stanley Kubrick

A Clockwork Orange is based on Anthony Burgess' 1962 novel.   Alex and his teenage gang ‘The Droogs' indulge themselves in ultra-violence.   During one act of violence, where later the woman is found dead, Alex is caught and taken away to prison.   For a chance at parole, Alex signs up for the experimental aversion therapy where he is brainwashed.   This experiment it to take violence off the streets.   This film is a “celebration of adrenaline and testosterone that is subversive and shocking.” (Davies, pg.52)

This dystopic classic turned cult worldwide from the get-go.   This could be a result of the novel already being a dystopic cult novel allowing its fan base to ensure the films cult status.   A Clockwork Orange was nominated

best picture for an Academy.   This film could be an example of a wide accepted film, not pushed in the dark that holds a cult status in the film industry.   As a dark, shocking film with extreme content, A Clockwork Orange must have been produced and released at the right time for it to be acclaimed as a masterpiece and had not failed in the theatres like most other dystopic, cult-rated films.
