Alphaville
1965 | 100 mins | France
Director: Jean-Luc Godard

Alphaville is a science-fiction film-noir; a real cult genre buster.   Most cult film genres are horror and science-fiction.   Sci-fi films have a tendency for dealing with stories of the future where technology has failed and has corrupted society.   “Alphaville is governed by a totalitarian system in which the individual counts for almost nothing and its alienated people have no use for art, love, or even thought.”

Lemmy Caution, an Outland agent, battles against a rigged system in search of Professor von Braun.   This dystopic setting provides viewers with a dark thriller, a comic pastiche of detective films, a love story and sci-fi all rolled into one.

Godard's films were received by a portion of the public during the 60's.   This could have been due to the fact that his visions and ideas conformed to the future ‘new wave' artists.   Sometimes cult films are poorly reviewed in their origins but have growing fan bases in other countries.   Alphaville is one of those films that has been appreciated as a great film in the western hemisphere and has received cult status even though it may not be perceived that way in France.
