Equilibrium utilizes a minimal colour palate of dark blues, grays. Emphasis on vivid colour, such as Mary O'Brien's red ribbon, creates a dramatic visual impact and eludes the audience to forbidden emotion in the state of Libria. The opening scene of backlight John Preston creates a striking film noir silhouette. Computer special effects such as creating a vast cityscape add to the notion of dictatorship and control. The exterior scenes, unlike classic film noir, are occasionally flooded with light, such as the plaza in front of Libria. The grit of classic film noir is distilled into a minimal graphic style of Libria, which can be viewed as being modern. In contrast, the visual style of the underground and the outskirts of Libria are complex and messy. | |||
