Renaissance takes the style of a black and white film and applies it to a visually stunning animation. Stark contrast of light and dark and the complexity of the shadows add visual and emotional depth to the characters and the space. Renaissance also draws from classic film noir imagery, such as the silhouette of the lone figure and the rain slicked streets. Steam lazily rises from the underground bath of Karas' obese informant. Animation allowed the use of razor sharp harsh edges of light which juxtaposed the black and white, but also soft bleeding light. Skewed angles and perspectives, such as the scene with Karas in the car, coupled with distant and close-up shots, set the stage for a visually dynamic narrative. | |||
