Special effects or “FX” is the creation of illusions in media such as film and television. These include primarily optical effects and mechanical effects. Optical effects are the application of special techniques with the camera to create images with the film photographically. Mechanical effects are the application of special techniques on set during live-action shooting. This includes elaborate set designs, scale models, pyrotechnics, atmospheric effects and make-up/costume design. The emergence of CGI and digital film making processes are inevitably intertwined with FX in film and television. This method breeds a new category of “visual effects” that invariably denotes the post production processes in which computer graphics is applied.
