Architectural Concepts

Much of the inspiration for this project came from Will Alsop's background as a painter.

A very early concept painting for the building.

The view from Grange Park was of importance. The idea of being able to see the building above the trees.

The function of the spaces under the table top were also of concern at the early stages of the project.

The colours and patterns on the table top itself were presented in varying ways. Suspended objects were part of the design at various stages, but ultimately deemed outside of the budget.

At one point the notion of transparency was explored.

Here a different semi transparent cladding was being examined through the medium of rendering.

Various colour schemes were looked at for the building. Here we see the idea of the coloured legs making their appearance.

The overall form of the building remained fairly constant throughout the latter part of the design process and explorations concentrated on colour and materials for the exterior finishes.

This rendering is quite close to the final project.

Except for thte signage, the final project was very close to this final rendering for the building.

A view from the roof looking down onto Butterfield Park. The final treatment of the park is quite different than what was proposed during the design stage of the project.

This section as used on the project website during the construction of the project shows in more detail the notion of the suspended sculptures that were ultimately not included in the project. Here you can also see that the project was at one time a single storey table top and a very different solution for the exit stairs was also looked at.

This drawing of the building, created by Geoff Olynyk of Walters Inc., the steel fabricator for the project, illustrates the relationship between the structural steel frame and the finished project.
