In Dark Knight, Batman, also known as John Wayne, is a superhero which is unlike the other protagonists in Equilibrium, Renaissance and Alphaville. As John Wayne, he is charming, handsome, and seemingly embodies the today’s values of money, women and fame. As Batman, he stands for justice, truth and good. The moral ambiguities of classic film noir protagonist are evident, but Batman lives in a Manichean world of good versus evil. He brings criminals to justice without murdering them. When forced to chose between the life of his love, Rachel Dawes, and the district attorney, Harvey Dent, Batman chooses Harvey as he believes it is the correct decision for the good of Gotham City. Batman does not represent the classic film noir hero of the 1940’s; rather he is a superhero of the 21st century.
