In Clockwork Orange the consumption of food is almost similar to the effect of Blade Runner in which a serious situation is rendered to be an everyday situation like eating. The average person usually cannot eat after an inhuman act. Eating would be the last thing one their mind yet in Clockwork Orange it seems to be perfectly fine to site down at a bar and have a glass of milk right after beating, robbing or raping. In the Korova milk bar, Alex and his gang gather for a drink to chat about their next adventure. This bar that is decorated with naked female sculptures some of which dispense their drinks are contrasted with the grey of the outside world. The neon lights and augmented furniture are symbolic to Alex’s state of mind. He lives in a different world where women are objects and there are hardly any others around. Yet it is when he is eating or drinking that he is acting somewhat civilized. Towards the end of the film, the scenes involving him eating are the ones in which we might feel an ounce of sorrow for his character such as the scene where Alex is eating spaghetti at the old rich man’s house in which he had previously raped and robbed. The spaghetti is placed in the middle of the room with nobody around comparable to a mousetrap waiting for him to be captured. He surrenders to it after much contemplation, and while both old man and bodyguard watching him he obviously realizes that he is being poisoned but he has already eaten so much that there is no going back, in which he decides to drink the wine. This scene is one of many of a series of scenes in which Alex has become the victim. He cannot even enjoy his meal, or his favorite music. In the end of movie Alex cannot even feed himself properly from all of his injuries. But he can finally enjoy his meal, and he is obviously rid of his previous impediments and after his physical injuries are healed his mental state is back to the same as the from the beginning movie. |
