Concept of food and eating in film |
|
The concept of food in film is one of many degrees of significance. The different appearances it takes and subject matter it conveys vary from film to film depending on era, content, environment and characters. The symbolism behind eating and food are more than what most audiences see. It illustrates a meaning that many do not even need to put thought into. It is a universal symbol in which can convey more than dialogue between characters in movies. The image of a gathering of people to eat is one of a strong representation universally. The type of food being served identifies meaning of a culture and usually compliments the importance of the feast and gathering. Connecting the characters through interaction of sharing a meal. The way in which they eat what specifically are they eating help define the personalities of the people. For example the feast can be rational and arousing. Food being compared representational to gluttony or transcendent.
In which many movies use food as the central theme to portray such ideas of sublime and greed. This gathering for the sake of consumption strongly corresponds to a spiritual union like Christianity.
In other religions the feast is also one that encompasses the idea of rebirth of recreation such as Buddhism.
The fine distinctions that are conveyed through food and its consumption are so diverse in its connotations. It makes it an efficient tool for the film makers to address the audience covertly. It is a strategy in which is not obvious to audiences yet establish an understanding within only one scene. The social the cultural and rational. For example the “Last Meal” significantly an interaction between Jesus gathering for his last meal before his destiny his known sacfrifice yet before this they gather to have a symbolic feast. Food meaning to many, the term soul food being fimilar to many movies. Where food southes the soul and evokes emotions. It is an ancient ritual and a neccesity of life. Traditions passed from generations of different cultures now especially significant as people are starting to invite diffferent traditions together more and more. Food being sacred. The food/or drinking scenes in a film seem to be one of the basic elements that give a certain credibility to its mood and its setting. Because eating or drinking is a necessary part of life, in fact, an everyday part of life, when we see the condition of the characters everyday life, we then relate more to their setting or era. in order to depict a realistic location environment.
I believe there is also a fascination in science fiction movies to depict how we will go about our everyday essentials such as eating, driving, etc. It is always exciting for audience members to see different creative takes on the director’s imagination whether or not it advances us in the plot, although it does create a stronger setting and culture. It is one of the reasons I personally watch sci-fi.
