Equilibrium takes place in a large city within the state of Libria. Libria is commanded by the dictatorship of Father. Propaganda promoting the ideals of Father is evident with large screens playing Fathers' teachings in the streets and also in the homes. Monumental architecture and spaces define the downtown of Libria. Although the minimalism and lightness of Libria contrasts with the film noir imagery of the city as a dirty immoral playground, it reinforces the theme of control and inhumanity. The sterile home environment, such as the single beds without sheets, pillows, or blankets, devoid the characters from comfort, which can lead to emotion. The underground and the outskirts of the Libra, such as the abandoned church, reflect the humanistic settings of classic film noir. | |||
