An Inconvenient Truth

Winter 2008 - Arch 125: Intro to Environmental Design

Do Your Carbon/Ecological Footprint

This is the first assignment given at the outset of a series of two
course series on environmental building design. It is given on the first day of class to 18 year old students, after watching An Inconvenient Truth, to begin to help them appreciate the issues of lifestyle, using multiple planets to maintain the same, and the relationship to carbon emissions.

Investigative Strategy

Students choose two of the calculators and prepare their ecological/carbon footprint.

Evaluation Process

Looking to see whether or not the students completed two of the online tests and made lifestyle suggestions.

Evaluative Criteria

Did the student submit copies of both of their footprint results? Did they submit a list of lifestyle suggestions in order to attempt to reduce their footprint? Mostly marks are given for simply having done the exercise, completeness, neatness.

Cautions - Possible Confusions
Students have to choose whether or not to use their "school lifestyle" or their "family/home" lifestyle. Sometimes good to have them do both to see the difference this makes.
Range of Applicability in terms of CLIMATE
It is good to have the students compare their results to show the effect of climate/home location on the footprint.
Range of Applicability in terms of TYPE
N/A
