I was already making numerous trips downtown (documenting ROM and Leslie Dan) when this much anticipated renovation started. The shape of the facade had gone through numerous iterations.

Project Images:
September 2005
By this time much of the Barton Myers facade (only 10 years old) had been removed. As you can see, the space in front of the building is rather tight... for anything.
I was dismayed to find that they had installed safety fence with wickedly small mesh. Far too small for my camera lens to poke through. The famous Henry Moore sculpture is still there, waiting to be moved to safety.
June 2006
Construction has started.
A view of the facade from Grange Park to the south. The new steel is just poking above the trees.

The tabletop of OCAD will prove to be a good vantage point for photos of the back.
The steel of the main portion of the addition continues. The spans are not that great, but the beams seem very deep running north to south.
July 2006

The view from the south. It is getting taller.
Ironworkers receive a delivery from the tower crane.

They grab the edge beam.
It is fitted into place.
Connecting the beam.

Beam connection, view from below.

They come two at a time for efficiency.
The ironworkers take the beams off and install them.
A view of one of the columns showing adjacent beam and girder conections.
The height of the addition above the Grange.
Cutouts in the beams allow for the passage of services.
Steel connections.
Construction is apparent on the front facade.
Steel framing is used between some of the existing portions of the gallery that are being renovated.
Another beam.
Lowering it into place.
Guiding the beam down...
And down to someone waiting below.
August 2006
Another floor is partially framed.
Closer view from Grange Park.
A view towards the central gallery spaces being framed. The floor to floor depth is quite significant.
View looking over the Grange.
Looking down on the project from the OCAD tabletop.
The new addition rises above the existing building.
The building's cross bracing system is evident.
A view into the building. Note the depth of the large beams with cutouts. These run north to south.
Decking is not yet complete here.
Steel framing in progress.
Close up view of one of the large connection points for the cross bracing.
View down into the building.
Steel rises to form a second floor on Dundas Street.
Signage from the partners in the project.
